Power, pennies and politics
In today’s press review, we look at new revelations concerning President Nicolas Sarkozy and the finances of France’s richest woman, Liliane Bettencourt.
The website Mediapart revealed further information about the L’Oreal case. This time, the ruling UMP party is accused of receiving cash illegally to finance Sarkozy’s campaign in 2007.
Liliane Bettencourt’s former accountant claims that her boss donated up to 150,000 euros to the UMP treasurer Eric Woerth. But in France, the law states that an individual is only allowed to give between 4,000 and 7,500 euros to a party…
The Elysée has denied any wrongdoing, saying the accusations are false.
The so-called “French political big bang” was on the front page of most French newspapers this morning, including France Soir, Le Figaro, Libération and L’Humanité.
And finally, Le Tour de France made the headlines in Le Parisien and L’Equipe.
