US jazz singer Al Jarreau has been rushed to a hospital in southern France and is in a "critical" condition, health officials say.

AFP - Veteran US jazz singer Al Jarreau was in a "critical" condition Friday in a French hospital where he was admitted for respiratory problems, health officials said.

Jarreau, 70, was taken to the intensive care unit of a clinic in the Alpine town of Gap late Thursday, the hospital said in a statement.

"Doctors are concerned about his condition," it said. "He is being given appropriate treatment and they hope to see an improvement in the coming hours."

Jarreau had been due to give a concert at a festival in nearby Barcelonnette.
