Presidential elections set for January

Nigeria will hold presidential elections next January, after a constitutional amendment allowed for the poll to be moved forward by three months. President Goodluck Jonathan has yet to announce whether he himself intends to run.

By News Wires (text)

REUTERS - Nigeria is set to hold presidential elections in January after the House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a constitutional amendment moving polls forward by three months.

The move brings elections forward to January from April in a bid to prevent the legal wrangling that followed the last polls in 2007, which were so marred by ballot stuffing that observers deemed them not to have been credible.

But the accelerated timeframe piles pressure on President Goodluck Jonathan to implement much needed electoral reforms and to announce whether he himself intends to run.

The amendment requires elections be held between 120 and 150 days before the presidential term ends, meaning polls would be in January. The constitution previously stated that polls must be held 30-60 days before the new term begins.

"The report of the First Amendment of the 1999 Constitution is hereby passed," said Speaker of the House Oladimeji Bankole.

Campuses re-open in Lagos.

After three months industrial action embarked upon by tertiary institutions owned by the Lagos State Government, the campuses were once again thrown open after Gov. Raji Fashola agreed to implement the agreement signed in 2009 by the various Unions in the tertiary institutions with the Federal Government of Nigeria.Students,parents,lecturers,non-academic workers and the communities were full of praises to the Governor for ending this industrial action. This is plus for Action Congress of Nigeria who had been propagating the free education policy of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo in Nigeria.

Credible Election

Jega is not capable of double existence. He can not be in 36 States of the Federation at the same time during election. Nigerians should try and do it right this time by voting and defending their votes. Option A4 is to be still preferred for our present stage political development. Good luck in the year 2011 election.

Hello fellow Nigerian,

Let us join hands to support Good luck Ebele .because it is God that sent him to come and deliver us.though i am in Ghana as a business man but i know what is good for my dear country Nigeria.

Wrong!

Presidential elections do not hold in January but will hold in April, 2011. What may hold in January 2011, are presidential primaries for Nigeria's ruling party, PDP, where it's presidential candidate will emerge to run for the said elections in April, 2011.

go home ATIKU

Nigerians will not accept any body with any certificate that will not qualify the person to be called up for National Youths Service ( N.Y.S.C.) to be her PRESEDENT again, we have suffered so much in the hands of these class of illiterates in the past. Again your activities when you are the chairman of PTDF is known to Nigerians. Those igbos supporting you are expired igbos. All igbos are solidly behind GOODLUCK JONATHAN. You will fail as usual. I am not a politician but know it that Nigerians are tired of those thieves with military and paramilitary background.

nigeria 2big to be one

nigeria 2big to be one

ILLEGAL HARM USE

It is a pity that despite the October 1st bombing in Eagles square Abuja in 2010 50th celebration, president Goodluck Jonathan could not ban importation of bangers into the country. It is so bad indeed. so, people could not differentiate between bomb and banger any longer even when the security of the Nigeria is under threat.

which way nigeria

I have adream, i can see a agr8t nija.but if and only if we as an individual, starting frm the youth, can decipline our selfs and say no to all forms or any art of indeciplines, and refuse to be and manipulated by some ego, vissonless, selfish and devil leaders in our societies. we shall get there in jesus name (Amen)

i hope it not like of ivory coast.

AFRICIANS and the world at large will be watching the nigerian election come january 2011. AFRICIANS shall be pproud if the election will be fair espacially if another canidate is been defeated .he should immediately accepts the defeat and not to carry guns as the case of the ivorian monster Gbagbo.

Nigerian Election, current

A friend of mine has gone from Calgary, Canada to assist and be a part of promoting a good candidate for President. So I just wanted to follow the news of how the election is progressing. Charlotte Rich

MY PRAYER

i wish NIGERIA the BEST election ever.

no seriousness in jega towards the election

DOES THE CHANGE OF TIME TABLE SHOW THAT JEGA IS SERIOUS WITH NIGERIA?

Forward Nigerians

I believe God has open the route to the best of Nigerians by bringing the president to be - Goodluck J. at this critical time of the country. I want to encourage Nigerians home and away to take the advantage to support Goodluck and allow God to work through him.

Up up up Nigeria.

nigeria in coma

the certitude of president jornathan ticket is undoutable.what then is left for post AREWA consensus?will ATIKU,I.B.B,AND BUHARI merge together to post a challenge to goodluck candidency?ofcourse not because of self intrest.if the north loose the seat then it will remain in coma for generations to come and if the south relinguishes power to the north then the politics of rotation in nigeria will became a thing of the past as northern orligachy will never let the power to shift back to south..

who the caps fit should wear it

Fellow Nigerians ,Elders ,youths and greedy Leaders. I beg of you to give space for the right person to take lead. A man of honor , respect and genuine leadership skills who can have the feelings of his fellow Nigerians and deliver the right democratic dividends to the people. Who the cap fits let him wear it OK "Bob Marley the Great". Positive change is what we need as a great country .

peace

Let the love of Nigeria be in your heart so that at the end it all peace will rain.

JONATHAN GOOD FOR NIGERIA

I support Jonathans ambition of leading the country beyond 2011.I believe he is a good representative of Nigerians. My only fear is that his party may jeopardize his good intentions;God forbid bad things.Good luck to you.
