Illegal fuel dumping, leaking oil, industrial pollution...In Gibraltar, the population and the ecosystem are under threat. France 24 investigated how and why this was allowed to happen.

Nagorno-Karabakh, the time bomb on Europe's doorstep

The enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh is a powder keg at the centre of a decades-old dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Its people are mostly Armenian, but under the Soviet Union it was ruled by Azerbaijan. In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh declared itself independent. A three-year war followed, killing around 30,000 people. A fragile truce still holds, but Armenian forces occupy large swathes of Azeri land, and oil-rich Azerbaijan says it will take back the territories by force if there's no peace deal.

Burma’s Rohingya: forced into exile

They're one of the most persecuted minorities on earth. Descendants of Muslim merchants, the Rohingya settled in Burma centuries ago. But in 1982, a law took away their nationality as well as their rights to property, marriage and education. Now a dispute between Buddhists and the Rohingya has reopened old wounds and sparked deadly violence. Forced into exile, the Rohingya have poured into camps in neighbouring Bangladesh. An undercover FRANCE 24 team went to meet them.

Total Untrue & Misleading Title

Other than the possible environmental damage caused by spills from all the bunkering operations taking place in Gibraltar waters, the entire report is dealing with an exclusively Spanish created problem & situation. The title henceforth is totally misrepresentative & misleading. Poor, biased & untrustworthy reporting in my view if you couldn't even get your title right!

As F24 and my title says, Gibraltar... is not at the heart of the problem on the report. It is in the Spanish areas. Whilst they are admittedly taking advantage of their close vicinity, the report doesn't tell of problems to Gibraltarian occupants.

The refinery should be

The refinery should be removed! this area could be so lovely. I live here and I often see the refinery spewing up black smoke and the flares are constantly on. the pollution coming out is not acceptable. The people here are at high risk of diseases and the natural environment oaround the area is suffering tremendously. PLEASE HELP US!

Good documentary, wrong name of city- It´s La Linea, not GIbralt

Agree totally with the advocation for name change. Watching the video, I was like this cannot be GIb, this is inside la linea. These are talking place in La Linea de La Concepcion. I lived there for almost a year and recognized all those place. Gibraltar is the British territory across the border who has English as its language, though a lot of them do understand Spanish.France 24 does need to change it. The Spaniards won´t be too happy with calling their property la linea. They would quite want it to be the other way around. You know calling GIbraltar, Spain.

Misleading

This documentary is very misleading and ill informed. Anyone watching this report who is unfamiliar with the area will be misled into thinking that all these issues are taking place in Gibraltar. Only the bunkering takes place in Gibraltar. All the other industries are in Spain. They have nothing to do with Gibraltar. The title should be ammended, and in future reporters should be more careful and accurate in their stories.

Fair but needs to be renamed

While bunkering in Gibraltar territorial waters does present a daily threat of spillage and environmental damage, it is controlled and patrolled on a daily basis by anti-pollution vessels from Gibraltar. Whilst the main pollution both aerial and in the sea comes from the refinery on the other side of the frontier, in Spain! Although the documentary is fair and informative, the geography is totally wrong, which is a shame as so often is with journalists wanting to make a name for themselves! British Gibraltar is not part of the Campo de Gibraltar, where the refinery is located, therefore I kindly ask you to change the name of this documentary.

The Illegal fuel dumping, leaking oil, industrial pollution...In Gibraltar, is only an advance of the petroquimic industry the has already thinking to sustitute for the human digest organs for a carburator, so very soon the problem will be solved.

Title is misleading!

The cause of this problem is that of a massive Spanish company on Spanish soil, there needs to be some clarity here that while the bunkering operations in Gibraltar waters pose a threat to marine life, the cause of cancer, deformities and mortalities linked to air pollution is all due to that of the Acerinox/ Cepsa plants.

As a Gibraltarian i totally agree with the amount of pollution in the area espsically in such a small place the amount of people with cancer is not normal. However, although Gibraltar does have a part to play, it is mainly Spain that has the problem with the plants and factories across the bay from Gibraltar. i have to say that the title of this documentary should be changed to Campo de Gibraltar, as calling it that rather than the current title ensures it 'blames' everyone involved not just Gibraltar. A lot of this is politics and it has been goin on for more that 300 hundred years since Gibraltar became a british colony. it is rumoured that Fanco placed the acerinox plant where it is to slowly kill out the gibraltarian people. but obviously that will never be revealed.
Gibraltar is a very small place to be blamed for this'time bomb'.
