It’s a particularly French phenomenon, and there’s even a term for it: la rentrée, or the return after the summer break. And to mark it every year is la rentrée littéraire, the time when millions of French people brush off the sand and put away those beach reads. This is when local publishers flood the market with hundreds of releases. But how many of these books are actually read, particularly by the younger generation who’ll reach for their iPhones or iPads rather than opening a book?
