Czech minister says Roma expulsions belie 'spirit of EU'

The Czech Republic's foreign minister has described France's expulsion of Roma migrants as "contrary to the spirit of European Union rules", saying he suspects "racist viewpoints" underlie the policy.

AFP - The Czech Republic's foreign minister on Saturday condemned France's expulsion of Roma Gypsies and said he could not avoid the suspicion that 'racist' thinking played a part in the policy.

"The way in which the President (Nicolas Sarkozy of France) is expelling Romanian citizens is contrary to the spirit of European Union rules," said Karel Schwarzenberg, writing in the Prague daily Lidove Noviny.

"One cannot avoid the suspicion that racist viewpoints are playing a role in this," he said.

The minister also criticised the way in which the debate on the issue was being held "without the new countries" of the EU, including the Czech Republic.

"To have a debate without the countries where this problem most probably has its roots is a bizarre and erroneous idea," he said.

In the latest deportations, France on Thursday sent nearly 300 Roma back to Romania.

France's crackdown has sparked international criticism in recent weeks. The European Union is also examining the legality of the move and the Vatican has also spoken out against it.

French ministers will travel to Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the situation with the European Commission, a commission spokesman said.

Thursday's expulsions brought the total number of Romanian and Bulgarian Roma deported so far this year to 8,313, up from 7,875 expelled throughout last year.

Earlier this month, Sarkozy announced that French authorities would dismantle some 300 unauthorised encampments used by both French Gypsies and members of the Roma minority born in Eastern Europe.

Those foreign-born Gypsies found to be living on French soil without means to support themselves would be expelled back to Romania and Bulgaria, with those going voluntarily receiving small cash grants.

ROMA = GYPSIES - Great injustice

I want to make a clear statement:
The article mentions GYPSIES at the end when in fact it should have reffered to them from the very beginning. The confusion is evident: ROMA SENT TO ROMANIA whereas ROMANIA is inhabited by ROMANIANS not by GYPSIES. Their true name has been distorted in a way which undermines and brings to shame the national identity of Romanians (white, latin people) . This nomadic minority's true name is Tzingari or Tigani derived from TE GANGE (from Gange, India).

Czech ministers responce to Roma expulsions

I find this comment rather amusing because the Czech national are experiencing similar problems as France although not on such a grand scale. If they want to support the Roma people and all that follows then let them have them - perhaps France should encourage these unwanted people to reside there.

If that is the case then

If that is the case then France should remove itself from the EU or disband the EU as a whole. . The point of the EU is that you lose some of your sovereign rights for the good of the whole. The Whole as in Europe. If the Czech are part of the Europe then their decision is just as important as yours as well as the french government. This latest act by Mr Sarkozy has only stregthned my beleif that the french are indeed closet racists or am I wrong?

Romo expulsions

The Czech foreign minister could always invite them all to his Country.

I fully support the actions

I fully support the actions of President Sarkozy. These Roma gypsies are staying in the country illegally, which is breaking the law. If they wish to live in France, they should get a visa, get a job and then apply for French Nationality.

Countries like the Czech Republic should not interfere with our national policy, as it's none of their business. They act like we're slaughtering them, for crying out loud!

I think that Switzerland and Norway are the only sane countries left in Europe, by staying out of the EU.

Re: Czech minister says Roma expulsions belie 'spirit of EU'

It's up to the French people through her government to decide who can enter and who can stay on her national terrority, not third party countries like the Czechs or EU Superstate
