France's image abroad has taken a heavy blow. The European parliament has condemned the government's expulsions of Roma gypsies, and called on it to suspend its measures immediately. Nearly a thousand Roma were expelled last month, mostly to Romania. The EU parliament's resolution was a victory for the centre-left and the liberals.
