France rapped on the knuckles over Roma

In today's French papers- the government is under fire on all sides, over secret service investigations into journalists' sources, the treatment of Roma and what immigration minister Eric Besson knew about a letter circulated to local authorities telling them to dismantle Roma camps.

EU condemnations of France's policy on Roma camps is on the front page of l'Alsace- a paper local to Strasbourg, France's most European city.

The paper says France's attempt to frame the Roma has failed- and the EU is right to bring it into line.

Another Strasbourg paper, Dernieres Nouvelles d'Alsace, agrees with this assessment- they say the whole episode is shameful for France.

Le Figaro is the only paper to defend the government- they say the European Commission is wrong to call the policy shameful.

Satirical paper le Canard Enchaîné reveals immigration minister Eric Besson did know in advance about the circular sent out in August that specifically ordered Roma camps to be dismantled- of course the minister has repeatedly denied all knowledge of that letter.

Liberation focuses on the revelation that France's intelligence services carried out an inquiry to identify the source of leaks to the press about the Woerth-Bettencourt affair.

Aujourd'hui en France defends the police's behaviour in the inquiry- but they question whether the investigation was strictly legal.

But France does have some fans in Belgium, according to le Parisien- some Francophone Belgians actually want to be French.

And finally on the front page of Le Figaro- the memoirs of a former CIA agent are already a bestseller before it hits the shops- because the Pentagon is trying to buy up the whole print run.
