Should France be in the Sahel? This region below the Sahara Desert, is rich in resources such as uranium; France is there in the form of the nuclear giant Areva, mining for the substance that is key to the French nuclear programme. But 7 workers were kidnapped from near the mine in Niger, taken across the border into Mali, held it is believed by the North African branch of Al Qaeda. Did Areva do all it could to ensure the safety of its staff?

Tunde FATUNDE, Journalist for the Guardian Newspaper (Lagos, Nigeria)
