French hostages: should France negotiate with al Qaeda?

For over a week, seven employees of French companies have been in the hands of al Qaeda's North African wing. They were kidnapped in Niger and are now in all likelihood held in remote northern Mali. France said yesterday it had indications the hostages were alive and stressed that it was ready to negotiate. So should France talk to al Qaeda or stand firm and refuse to give in?
