Brazil after Lula

Under the rule of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil has become more and more prosperous. Its agriculture industry is thriving, and as a result the country has been given the nickname "the world's farm". But not everywhere in Brazil has been hit by this wave of good fortune. Corruption, bureaucracy, poor infrastructure, bad quality education and an overly strong currency are just some of the problems facing Lula's successor.

Religious violence threatens democratic transition in Burma

It was long a hermit state cut off from the rest of the world by military junta that controlled its people. Now Burma is opening up to democracy and it has been welcomed into the international community. But inter-ethnic tensions within are threatening the peace and security of thousands. Violence between ethnic Muslim and Buddhist communities has seen many killed and forced thousands to flee their homes.

Observers say the programme could fail in the long term because the key question of location is being overlooked.

Despite generalised cutbacks, the authorities in Barcelona still want to fund injection centres which have reduced deaths from drug overdoses by 40 percent since their introduction twelve years ago. In Spain, these units have the general backing of all political parties. However, in Barcelona, the conservative party now thinks it is time the centres are moved away from commercial and residential areas.

Berlin Wall remnants to make way for luxury apartments

In recent weeks The East Side Gallery in Berlin has become a battleground. This 1.3 km strip of the Berlin Wall, decorated by artists after German reunification, is being partially removed to allow developers to build hotels and luxury flats. Berliners are up in arms and have hit the streets for the past four weeks to protest against the project. But on Wednesday the bulldozers appeared at dawn to remove the segments.

Brazil's Rising Star

The difference between Brazil and France is that, the Brazilians everyday wake up and try to make a living, and the French people wait for the social welfare.

Brazil will continue to progress

The primary reason is Lula did so much for all the people, those at the top of the socio-economic ladder and those at the bottom. His humanitarian and economic policies will progress. And Brazil will continue to spawn entrepreneurs who are also human beings like Ricardo Semler, who is equally concerned with success in business and with the progress of "anthropology", that is his concern and actions for what is natural and humane for workers and people in general. If Lula's hand picked candidate wins the run off, as she is expected to do. Also the move away from the US and its meddling in South America, laid the foundation for Lula's success. Long live Brazil
