Miners' ordeal nears end
Thirty-three miners who have been trapped for the past two months in a Chilean mine are about to be freed. The world's media and Chile's President Pinera are waiting at the site for the rescue operation. There's no doubt that the process will be long, risky and complex. All over the country the miners are considered national heroes.

Leadership of president of Chile compared to Katrina
At about 1625 on your "Week in Review" in the Washington area, i noted an unfavourable comparison between the "leadership" of the President of Chile, and that of George Bush in the Katrina affair. Perhaps it's convenient for your 'commentators' to ignore US Federal Law, but it iw REQUIRED for the govenor of an affected state to sign a letter asking for Federal assistance, before such "leadership' can be given. The Democratic govenor of Louisiana refused for more than 4 days to sign such a letter. Hence, the Federal government could do NOTHING. One of the Federal officials present, said he counted it as a mojor feat on his part, to keep the govenor and the mayor of New Orleans from killing each other. The Govenor at one point threw an office stapler OVERHAND at the mayor's head, barely missing him. While it may be 'politically correct' to ignore US Federal law, how about SOME honesty in "news"casting? Thanks from the colonies.
