US electoral battle is raging on the Web

On the eve of the mid-term elections, the electoral battle is raging on the American web. The net relays the combat of a group of Iranians seeking asylum in Greece. And what appears to be a woman with a mobile phone in a Charlie Chaplin film.

US: MIDTERM ELECTIONS

From taxation to climate change and same sex marriage, in this animation we see two cuddly toys debating the subjects that have divided America. A last minute clip that has been included in the merciless online battle between Republicans and Democrats on the eve of the midterm elections.

In an attempt to mobilize young people, Move On an organization close to the Democrat party, recently launched this online campaign. In the video we see a message from the future calling upon electors to cast their vote and change the course of history to avoid the United States of the future having Sarah Palin elected to the White House and with the support of large corporations declare war on China, Norway … and the Pacific Ocean.

The most popular method used in this electoral campaign has been criticizing the other party. John Dennis, California’s republican candidate, has uploaded this parody of the Wizard of Oz, with his rival Nancy Pelosi in the role of the wicked witch, accused of increasing national debt.

And in response to this influx of negative publicity, initiatives have been launched on the web so that electors can forge their own opinions and make an informed choice. The site Vote Easy for example shows you which candidates share the same opinion as you on subjects like abortion, the war in Afghanistan as well as education.

25 IRANIANS ON HUNGER STRIKE IN GREECE

25 Iranian immigrants in Greece have been on hunger strike for the past two weeks. They hope to be made political refugees but have so far been refused. They had been given virtually no media coverage in Greece and these asylum seekers are now turning to the web to get their message heard.

Dozens of videos have been posted on YouTube. This one shows that on their first day of hunger strike, some of them sewed their mouths shut as a sign of protest. The images also show the little camp they have set up in central Athens in the hope of raising public awareness on the critical situation of political refugees in the country.

These images uploaded on the 16th of October, show one of the refugees, Masoud Faramarzi being taken to hospital following several days of hunger strike. In the video we see the refugee’s tent which is covered with anti-Iranian slogans condemning the Mullah regime.

And the situation has provoked several confrontations with the police. In this video, filmed on the 17th October we see the local police being aggressive towards the Iranians on hunger strike.

Local groups have shown the refugees their support. On this site, an anti-capitalist candidate at Athens City Council denounces the situation and claims to have seen employees at the Iranian embassy harass the protestors.

COLLAPSUS COLLAPSUS

Here is an original web documentary made in the style of a thriller. The theme of Collapsus is the energy crisis. On one side, an interactive map with statistical data. On the other, a news channel with two presenters. And in the middle, cartoons, reports and stories. This web documentary was made by Tommy Pallotta and is looking to analyze the complexity of the energy market through ecological eyes.

SUPER TITI

This is a new type of Masked Avenger. Ecologist and prankster, Super Titi roams the streets of Grenoble in France, fighting incivilities and punishing the perpetrators. In this video we see him throw a bucket of water over a female driver who threw a packet of cigarettes on the ground. Super Titi is in fact a character dreamt up for an institutional campaign aimed at teaching young people about recycling.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

These images have been the object of much intrigue for web users over the past few weeks. Taken from the making of Charlie Chaplin’s film ‘The Circus’ we see an extra holding something that looks like a mobile telephone. As soon as it was uploaded this video started the craziest of rumours, time travel? A hearing aid from the time? Or that the video is quite simply a hoax? The mystery has yet to be solved...
