Republicans in the US have recaptured the House of Representatives and gained ground in the Senate in historic mid-term elections. The Democrats managed to limit the damage by retaining their majority in the Senate. But their diminished numbers on Capitol Hill leave Barack Obama facing a hard slog for the next two years.
