Monfils to lead French team against Serbia

Text by News Wires

Latest update : 2010-11-23

French tennis team captain Guy Forget has named Gael Monfils (pictured), Michael Llodra, Arnaud Clement, Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet as his squad to face Serbia in the Davis Cup final at Belgrade Arena on December 3-5.

AFP - France captain Guy Forget on Tuesday named a five-man squad for the Davis Cup final against Serbia in Belgrade from Dec 3-5 spearheaded by their top ranking player Gael Monfils.

In the absence through injury of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, world No.12 Monfils will be expected to lead the challenge in the singles against the Serbs who will look to world No.3 Novak Djokovic to bring them two points.

The other singles spot for the French is less certain with Forget saying he will wait until the last minute before deciding on the final four-man composition of his team.

Aside from Monfils, Forget named Gilles Simon, Michael Llodra, Arnaud Clement and Richard Gasquet in his squad for the December 3-5 encounter.

Forget explained that despite Gasquet occupying a 'stand-in' role it was entirely feasible that he could be picked in place of Simon or Clement to team up with his two more obvious picks - Monfils and Llodra.

"I've included Richard Gasquet in my squad of four players as required by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) because for an event of this importance it strikes me as essential to prepare five players.

"They are all setting out on an equal footing. Very often we've seen in the past a fifth player who not only is included in the squad of four but who ends up playing and even helping the team to win.

"Even if I've read here and there that Richard feels sidelined that's not at all the case. He has Davis Cup experience and I know he's motivated by this event."

Asked if he had an idea already in his head about who he was going to field in Belgrade Forget replied: "I've more or less got an idea but I hope to have a clearer one from this training preparation and after I've seen what the courts are like in Belgrade because the speed (of the surface) will be a determining factor in my choice.

"The only player who is almost certain to be on court providing he doesn't get injured is Gael."

France will be out to win the Davis Cup for the 10th time, while Serbia will play for the first time in the final of the team tournament.

The France team announced on Tuesday to take on Serbia in the Davis Cup final in Belgrade from December 3-5:-
