Violence against women: breaking the silence
Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Created by the UN in 1999, it is commemorated across the globe because acts of violence against women happen everywhere, all the time. Whether we're talking about rape, murder or other forms of brutality, it's a stark reality that cuts across boundaries of age, race, wealth and geography - from war zones in Africa to suburban households in Europe.
