Monogamy? It's not for the French!

In today's French papers- what really happened to Rio-Paris flight 447, why Brussels is full of French tax exiles and why French spouses just can't stop themselves from straying.

Kicking off with the front page of Libération- this is about the plane that famously disappeared over the Atlantic between Rio and Paris last June- and seemingly vanished into the thin air.

The paper has got hold of a confidential memo from Air France’s lawyer- accusing the plane’s manufacturer Airbus.

The memo says Airbus knew for months before the crash that ice could build up on the speed sensors on the side of the plane and stop them working- that’s what investigators think happened here- but they said nothing.

Air France had already had problems with the same piece of equipment, made by Airbus on 15 different occasions- and reported it to the manufacturer- but they say Airbus did nothing.

This is of course extremely damning for Airbus- Libe’s editorial calls for a full judicial inquiry to find out just who was responsible for the disaster.

On Le Figaro’s front page is French socialist leader Martine Aubry.

She appeared on French TV on Wednesday night saying that she, IMF director general Dominique Strauss Kahn and Segolene Royal- who was the socialist presidential candidate in 200è –have come to an agreement – only one of them will run for the French presidency in 2012.

That’s big news in French politics because they’re the three main socialist candidates and there have been plenty of divisions between them in the past so choosing to present a united front is pretty significant.

However le Figaro- which of course is a right wing paper- is a bit sceptical that they’ve managed to agree quite as easily as that- the paper says Strauss Kahn would clearly be the best candidate according to opinion polls- they give him as much as 62% of voting intentions when he’s compared with Nicolas Sarkozy- but le Figaro says it’s doubtful either Aubry or Royal is really ready to give up their presidential ambitions.

Aujourd’hui en France has France’s tax exiles on its front page- apparently they’re all in Brussels.

The paper says they’re trying to avoid a wealth tax that’s payable in France on incomes over 790 thousand euros a year- and doesn’t exist in Belgium- where profits made on stocks are also exempt from tax- they quote a rather wealthy man who’s saved 2 million euros in taxes over  five years by moving to Brussels- and apparently hundreds of other French citizens are following him every year.

And finally to French tabloid France Soir- their headline says French couples are more and more unfaithful- it’s a classic stereotype but apparently the facts do bear it out.

60% of French men and 50% of French women say you can love someone and still cheat.

The paper asks if the idea of monogamy is dead- and concludes that in France at least it is.

The article says the French want it all- the warm familial cocoon and the frisson of the forbidden.
