New video released of kidnapped French journalists
A new video has been received of French journalists Stéphane Taponier and Hervé Ghesquière, who were kidnapped in Afghanistan on Dec. 29 last year, French officials confirmed on Monday. The video was likely taped in mid-November.
AFP - A new video of two French television journalists kidnapped a year ago by suspected Islamist insurgents east of Kabul has been released to authorities in France, a report said on Monday.
"The video has been authenticated. It was shot around mid-November," journalist and presenter Carole Gaessler said on France 3 television.
Foreign ministry spokesman Bernard Valero confirmed the date and authenticity of the video, but did not provide any further details.
Stephane Taponier and Herve Ghesquiere, a reporter and a cameraman for the state-owned channel, were kidnapped on December 30 last year in an area rife with anti-government insurgents.
In the video, Taponier talks to his family, while Ghesquiere talks to his partner, Gaessler said.
French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie on Sunday expressed hope that the two reporters would be released as soon as possible.
"We known that they are alive, relatively healthy, although it is clear that after a year things are starting to weigh," she said.
A senior French military official in September suggested that the two reporters could be rescued by Christmas, but President Nicolas Sarkozy would not confirm this.

Held hostage for 541 days
Our prayers are surely with Herve, Stephane & their families!
Kindly explain
Kindly explain why you say 534 days they have been held hostage. It's not even a year - they were kidnapped according to the above article, Dec 29 last year which is 2010.
Explain the maths and don't play with numbers.
Ghesquière and Taponier
French government should strongly intervene with Aphgan authorities to try to find out a solution and put in a corner the Talebans. The risk is that this extremely long and useless stand-by keeps going on....
Hurry up, please. Thank you.

The freedom of the press should be respected.Only a free press can insure that the will know what is going on in this world..."The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error." ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859
