Merkel's next move: Will Germany stick to its guns on austerity?

François Hollande steals the show at his first late-night EU summit but the ball remains firmly in Angela Merkel’s court. Her constituents remain torn between paying for pain they don’t (yet) feel and shouldering the blame for an eventual collapse of the euro.

And where...

Best of Culture 2010

I was simultaneously astonished and disheartened to learn that your film critic, Lisa Nelselson, declared Toy Story 3 to be her favourite film of 2010. While I also enjoyed it enormously, I feel there were other film much more deserving of the best film accolade. Winter's Bone, Blue Valentine, and Biutiful to name but three. (Has Ms. Nelselson seen any of these films?) Yes, they all deal with (but not exclusively) serious and I suppose "depressing" themes, but they also encourage us to think, examine, reflect, empathise, and even perhaps to compare some of our own experiences, and to enlighten us about the experiences of others. The notion that real life is depressing enough is childish. Are we such babies that we cannot deal with anything but childrens' entertainment? God forbid we should examine our experiences of daily life, both the positive and the negative, through the medium of serious art. Let's just make ourselves a milkshake and settle down to a cartoon. Anything else is too much for our fragile nerves. Bollocks. Lisa Nelselson, GROW UP.
