After Ben Ali, who’s next?
The chaos in Tunisia is making the headlines this morning. The French press wonders if the crisis will spread across the Arab world. Also in the papers: Marine Le Pen, the new leader of the far-right Front National party....and how taking a shower helps stimulate your mind!
Former Tunisian president Ben Ali fled the country over the week-end, following weeks of protests. According to the left-wing newspaper Libération his downfall could endanger other dictators in the region.
Meanwhile, Le Figaro interviewed Tunisian demonstrators. One of them says “I’m 28 and it’s the first time I get to live in a democracy”. Le Parisien talks about groups of people who are using all sorts of weapons to protect themselves against Ben Ali’s supporters. Similar story in the communist newspaper L’Humanité.
The crisis was triggered by the death of a young man, who set himself on fire because he was struggling to make a living. The Christian daily La Croix says he has become a symbolic figure, just like the Chinese protester in Tianenmen Square.
