“Mubarak get out!”
In today’s press review, we focus on the crisis in Egypt. A week after the start of the protests, the army has taken over Cairo with military tanks, jets and helicopters. All eyes are on the army’s next move. Is it going to support the crowd or the regime? Also in the papers, France’s victory in the world handball championship.
It’s the first time since the start of the conflict that military helicopters are seen buzzing over Cairo. According to Libération, President Mubarak’s fate hangs on the military. In a government reshuffle, he named two military men as his Vice President and his Prime Minister...
L’Humanité’s front page also shows a military tank surrounded by thousands of protesters. Le Figaro and Le Parisien say people are trying to get the army on their side. Until now the army has remained cautious as they want to avoid a bloodbath, which could in turn make way for extremists. According to Libération and La Croix, the army is going to play a crucial role in the coming days.
Libération’s editorial doesn’t mince its words, calling Mubarak a “brutal moron” and Egyptians “brave”.
Meanwhile, Le Figaro also focuses on the United States, Egypt’s strategic ally.
And finally, France Soir, L’Equipe, Le Telegramme de Brest and Le Journal de Saone et Loire dedicated their front page to French handball stars. France won the world competition yesterday. Vive les bleus!
