Egypt uprising: has Europe lost touch?

As the world watches events unfold in Egypt and Tunisia, Europe is wondering how it can reinvent its policy towards the region. Launched in July 2008, the Union for the Mediterranean has failed to promote economic integration and democratic reform across North Africa and the Middle East. How can Europe stay relevant in the region? Why is it that European policymakers failed to hear the aspirations of the local population? We put these questions to two MEPs.

Unemployment plagues Europe

Unemployment has risen sharply across the Union as the financial crisis has bitten deeper into the European economy. It now affects 22 million Europeans. Brussels inaugurated its first eco-friendly building recently. Called Solaris, the building burns less energy than other buildings and hopes are high there will be more such buildings to come.

Estonia leads the way in the fight against illiteracy

Estonia is moving to the front of the pack in the EU’s battle to combat illiteracy. Only around 14% of Estonians under fifteen have literacy problems, to put that into context, approximately 22% of French in the same age range have difficulties.
