THE OBSERVERS

A show produced with photos, videos and personal accounts from our Observers around the world - all checked by our staff here in Paris. Saturday at 10.15 am Paris time.

Latest update : 2011-03-02

Fundamentalists vent anger at legal prostitution in Tunis, a Cuban course on the dangers of social media and feminists take to the streets to protest Berlusconi’s behaviour

Derek Thompson presents a news show produced exclusively from content provided by amateurs: photos, videos and personal accounts from our network of Observers around the world - all checked by our staff in Paris. First run Saturdays at 8:10 am Paris time.

STORY 1: TUNISIA

We begin today in Tunis. The city has had a red light district since colonial days, where prostitution is legal. Muslim fundamentalists didn't much like it, but under President Ben Ali there was nothing they could do - their political parties were banned. Now that Ben Ali's out of the picture, Islamists have been harassing the prostitutes. But are they who they seem to be?

Observer: Zied, who lives in the neighbourhood of Abdala Gesh Street, in the old city of Tunis.

STORY 2: CUBA

Next up we check in with one of our oldest Observers - Yoani Sanchez, who's been with us since the beginning. She’s Cuba's best-known blogger. Time magazine has called her one of the most influential people in the world. But her fame has also made her a target. In a video made for Cuba's cyber police, she was singled out as an example.

Observer: Yoani Sánchez in Havana.

STORY 3: ITALY

Our last Observer today has had enough of her prime minister. She is a feminist in Italy, and he is Silvio Berlusconi. He's accused of having sex with an underage prostitute but that's not the only reason Italian women have been taking to the streets.

Observer: Barbara Kenny, in Rome.
