Macedonia: the forbidden name (part 1)

Europe District takes you to Macedonia, a former Yugoslav republic whose long-standing name dispute with Greece has hampered Skopje’s progress towards EU and NATO membership. We also show you why a row over media freedom has prompted snap elections in the country, and we drink coffee with Esma Redzepova, Queen of the Gypsies.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: divisions dampen EU hopes

Twenty years after the start of the war, ethnic divisions remain frozen in law. Nowhere is it more true than in Mostar's segregated schools. We also meet Europe's first veiled mayor: she runs the city of Visoko. We talk to Sevdah singer Amira who tells us how Bosnia's traditional music has gained an audience abroad and we follow Jasna Samic, a Franco-Bosnian writer who shows us her favourite places in Sarajevo.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: divisions dampen EU hopes

Twenty years after the start of a bitter conflict, Bosnia remains divided along ethnic lines. We travel to Banja Luka, the capital of the Serb entity, where Bosnia's Serbs are increasingly critical of the way the local economy has been run for the past decade. We also follow a community doctor who tells us more about the poor state of the country's health care system and we take to the slopes of Jahorina, one of Bosnia's favourite ski resorts.

We travel to the border with Syria where the situation remains very difficult for over 120,000 Syrian refugees sheltering in Turkish camps. We also meet members of the Alevi community who feel marginalized in predominantly Sunni Turkey. Finally, we take you for a walk through the streets and backstreets of Istanbul, with famous TV presenter Levent Erden.

Turkey and the EU: drifting apart

Eight years after the opening of membership talks, Turkish pride is wounded as the country feels rejected by a number of EU member states. Meanwhile, critics say the ruling AK Party of Prime Minister Erdogan has challenged Turkey's secular system and undermined freedom of expression. But we also discover a very confident Turkey with a booming economy and a new diplomacy.

"forbidden name"

Its not "forbidden" at all. What is desired is an "addition" to the name. Pity FYROM is so intrasigent over the whole name thing. And if this is their attitude before joining the EU and NATO, then one has to wonder what they will be like when they join the two bodies.

MACEDON

Alexander was king of Macedonia....!
The first Greek king was Bavarian OTTO,at 1830,when Greece has been created!
Greeks give us back our land, which you have occupied at 1913!
Macedonia for the Macedonians!

Macedonia is Macedonia

Alexander of Macedon III also known as the great was a Macedonian king, not a 'greek' king, where he was considered a tyrant and foreign invader!

100 years of foreign occupation in Macedonia will never wipe the Macedonian people, their culture and heritage out. Greece has been raping Macedonia for the past 100 years with the help of France and England...

Not for much longer!
