Sarkozy's UMP party shrugged off a dire performance in Sunday’s local elections, while the winning Socialist Party celebrated their victory as a precursor to next year’s presidential poll. The far-right, meanwhile, spoke of a “redrawing” of politics.

The Socialist Party (PS) collected 36 percent in the second round of a poll to choose councillors in France's 100 departments, according to official provisional results.
