First woman fined for flouting new 'burqa ban'
French police fined a woman for wearing a full Islamic veil for the first time on Tuesday as a new ban against full-face coverings came into force. The woman was fined 150 euros in the Mureaux district north-west of Paris.
AFP - French police fined a woman for wearing a full-face Islamic veil, the first reported enforcement of a ban on the garment on the day it came into effect, a police source said Tuesday.
The young woman, born in 1983, was fined 150 euros (216 dollars) "without incident" in a shopping centre in Mureaux, northwest of Paris, early Monday evening, the source said, without elaborating on exactly what she was wearing.
France on Monday became the first country in Europe to apply a ban on the wearing of full-face coverings, including the Islamic niqab. At least two niqab-wearing women were arrested the same day for protesting the ban.
French police have voiced fears the law will be impossible to enforce, since they have not been empowered to use force to remove head coverings, and could face resistance in already tense immigrant districts.
But Interior Minister Claude Gueant insisted on Monday that the ban would be fully applied, in the name of "secularism and equality between men and women... two principles upon which we can not compromise."
"The police and the gendarmerie are there to apply the law and they will apply the law," he said.
The law came into effect at an already fraught moment in relations between the state and France's Muslim minority, with Sarkozy accused of stigmatising Islam to win back votes from a resurgent far right.
French officials estimate that only around 2,000 women, from a total Muslim population estimated at between four and six million, wear the full-face veils that are traditional in parts of the Arab world and South Asia.
Many Muslims and rights activists say the right-wing president is targeting one of France's most vulnerable groups to signal to anti-immigration voters that he shares their fear that Islam is a threat to French culture.

Burqas
My adopted Mother, a devout Christian, wore a small head covering at almost all times. It did not cover her face, only her hair, which she did not cut. Occasionally when she was shopping , a clerk would ask her about it. Her response was that God asked it of her.
The Muslim issue is a bit different. The Burqa is a response to the passage in the Koran which says "A man should not display his wife in the market place as he would a flower".
This issue is one of the main reasons I have such a problem with Islamic law. This "interpretation" is a real reach at best, and an outright corrupt way to subjugate women at the worst.
We ALL no what that passage really means, and it makes perfect sense. Having your wife in a bikini in the market place will cause nothing but trouble.
face veils
They should be forcably removed in public! If muslims want to live in the west.... then assimilate!
Otherwise go back to the middle east!
hats off to France !

muslims in france
France is a secular country and they should respect our laws and culture! Those people want to impose their laws on us, the french, they have no respect for the land that welcomed them. Arabs are the most arrogant people of all. If they are not happy, the door is wide open, they can leave ! When we go to their countries of orignine, we have to cover and we do respect their laws. Religion make people do stupid things, religions should go !
HUMAN RIGHTS!
hello!

Rememeber You Will Be Accountable For This Day!
Unfair and against democracy
This new law in France it is not about secularism or gender inequality. If so than everyone should have the right to do whatever they think is right. As a democratic state like France they should promote the human freedom which is the main factor for any liberal state. But by forcing this law they not only going against the human freedom but also promote the clash of civilizations.
