Gunmen opened fire on a military post in southern Yemen killing two soldiers and injuring five others on Wednesday. A local official said groups loyal to al Qaeda were responsible for the attack.

REUTERS - Gunmen shot dead two Yemeni soldiers and wounded five others in an attack on a southern military checkpoint on Wednesday that was blamed on groups loyal to al Qaeda, a local official said.

The attack took place in Zinjibar, the capital of the southern Abyan province, where al Qaeda militants have been active. State control over Abyan has slipped during a three-month political standoff in Yemen over President Ali Abdullah Saleh's rule.
