Martelly sworn in as president in Haiti

Michel Martelly was sworn in as president Saturday, taking over the reins from Rene Preval in the country's first democratic transfer of power from one party to another.

AFP - Michel Martelly took the oath of office Saturday as Haiti's new president, assuming the leadership of a country still in ruins from one of the most destructive earthquakes of modern times.

Martelly was sworn in as a power outtage plunged into darkness the ceremony which was held in a building temporarily housing the country's parliament.

He assumed the office from outgoing president Rene Preval in the first democratic transfer of power from one party to another in the country's turbulent history.
