Food fears
Food scandals are as frightening as they are influential. As soon as Germany’s E. coli outbreak emerged, vegetable sales plummeted, tens of millions of euros worth of shipments were canceled and governments were at loggerheads over who was responsible.
This week in Health, we start by putting the rare bacteria identified in Hamburg under the microscope. Scientists have discovered that this strain of ECOLI is highly resistant to antibiotics and we may only have ourselves to blame.
Next we head to the United Kingdom where researchers have developed a blood test to help halt the spread of the human version of mad cow disease, known as variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.
And finally, is China the world champion of food adulteration? We take a look at the reasons behind some of the country’s riskiest farming practices.
