It has been a polarising issue in some countries such as the US, one that threatens to erupt during campaign seasons. FRANCE 24 takes a look at the status of same-sex unions across the globe.

The official recognition of same-sex unions started in northern European nations before spreading to several other countries across the continent and eventually crossing the Atlantic. But a gay couple’s right to marriage remains fraught and contested in several countries.
