Insects under threat
The warm season has arrived in France and the Asian hornet is awakening. Since its introduction in 2004, this aggressive insect has been devastating bee colonies in the southwest. Just a handful of them can wipe out a hive within hours.
We start Environment in Bordeaux this week where apiculturists are battling to contain this unwelcome guest.
Next, we head to Madagascar where a killer varroa mite has caused its first bee casualties on the on the nation island. In some regions, 90% of all hives have been destroyed by the blood-sucking mite.
And finally, we visit a remote corner of the Sinai desert to speak to conservationists trying to save the world's smallest butterfly, known as the Baton Blue.
