Libya: Tripoli opposition waiting for its moment

Fighting in the Nafusa mountains, in western Libya : This video was reportedly filmed on Sunday during a rebel attack. The revolutionary forces say they have advanced towards the capital, where successive NATO airstrikes have weakened Colonel Gadaffi’s military.

These latest developments could prompt opponents in Tripoli (who up until now have been working underground), to join the uprising. Activists, like the group “Free Generation Movement” are regularly carrying out operations in the capital. This video was uploaded on Monday and shows them getting ready to burn a poster of Muammar Gaddafi in broad daylight, without getting caught.

And in this footage which was reportedly filmed two weeks ago, the same group of young opponents attached sky lanterns to the red black and green flag of the Libyan revolution and sent it up into the Tripoli sky.

In addition to these underground operations, there have also been spontaneous anti-government demonstrations reported in the capital. This video is said to have been filmed in a district of Tripoli during a rebel’s funeral. As we can see in this amateur footage the rally was broken up by security forces.

Gaddafi’s opponents in the capital live in fear of repression and so anti-government actions are orchestrated from home. They find ways to post statements online even though Internet and SMS services have been shut down, but they have to use other means of communication to coordinate their actions

 Debate on homosexuality in Ghana

Is Ghana’s government looking to monitor the country’s homosexual community as part of its fight against HIV and AIDS? The authorities believe the growing number of homosexuals in Ghana has contributed to the growing rate of HIV and AIDS in the country.

Homosexuality has been the topic of lively debate in recent weeks after an NGO reportedly registered 8 000 homosexuals across the country where under Ghanaian law, male same-sex sexual activity is officially illegal.

Influential Ghanaian blogger Atos says in this post he does not understand his fellow citizens’ hatred towards the gay community and says they should be left alone. His stance has triggered a multitude of reactions, on Facebook in particular where web users have been debating the decriminalization of homosexuality.

In this article, Blogger Kajsa says she is pleased there is now public debate in Ghana about the issue and that the taboo has finally been broken. She hopes this will help change the status quo for homosexuals in Ghana.
