France in mourning

The French newspapers all lead with the same story this Bastille day: the deaths of 5 French soldiers in Afghanistan which overshadow the annual military parade.

France Soir puts the photo of every one of the 69 French soldiers killed in Afghanistan on its front page, whilst le Parisien looks at how the latest five troops died, and if military tactics were at fault.

Le Figaro says they died for France and for the cause of freedom - while left-wing Liberation says they may well have died for nothing, as ten years of foreign intervention in Afghanistan has left the country as poor and chaotic as before, and the Taliban arguably stronger.
