THE OBSERVERS

A show produced with photos, videos and personal accounts from our Observers around the world - all checked by our staff here in Paris. Saturday at 10.15 am Paris time.

Latest update : 2012-03-23

A controversial Lebanese belly dancer, fake Apple Stores in China and odd coffins in Siberia

This week our Observers take us on stage with a Lebanese belly dancer, into a Chinese "Apple Stoer," and all the way to Siberia, where a coffin maker from Ghana is working on a very special order.

STORY 1 : LEBANON - ISRAEL

When a Lebanese belly dancer and an Israeli heavy metal band perform on stage together, it raises more than a few eyebrows. Lebanon and Israel are still technically at war, and in Lebanon, any kind of public dealing with an Israeli is considered a criminal act. But dancer Johanna Fakhry decided to go ahead anyways – Here she tells us why.

We go now to the Heavy Metal Festival Hellfest, in western France with the belly-dancer Johanna Fakhry

STORY 2 : CHINA

They have the famous apple logo, the sleek design and the high-tech displays. Apple stores? Guess again!
These Chinese versions of the mecca of Mac lovers are fall fake… but as our Observer in China explains, none of his compatriots seem to mind.

We go now to Kunming, in south-western China with our Observer – we’ll call him Sui

STORY 3 : RUSSIA

A little under a year ago, we discovered a young Ghanaian artist who specialises in creative burial coffins. Well now we’ve come across the artist again, but this time he’s in Siberia. He’s gotten a very special order – of a casket in the shape of a vodka bottle.

We go now to Novossibirsk, in Siberia with our Observer, Ghanean artist Eric Adjetey Anang.
