Extreme volatility is rocking global stock markets. France, more than most, has been at the mercy of huge swings. Nicolas Sarkozy is back in Paris doing all he can to reassure investors that his government is on course to cut the deficit. Strauss-Kahn: will he take on Sarkozy?

Dominique Strauss-Kahn stole the show at the G20 in Paris. He stopped short of declaring his intentions to run in the 2012 presidential elections but dropped some major hints. If the polls are to be believed DSK could be a major problem for Nicolas Sarkozy. First though, he’ll have to win over a divided French Left.
