Liveblog: Wednesday's action as it happened

Text by FRANCE 24

Latest update : 2011-08-24

Libyan rebels and supporters of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi fought running battles in Tripoli on Wednesday, hours after the fugitive leader vowed to fight until "victory or martyrdom". Follow all the action as it happened on our liveblog.

Key updates:
  • Rebels control most of Tripoli but there are still pockets of resistance.
  • Gaddafi’s location remains unknown, but in an audio tape released last night he vowed "martyrdom or victory" and called for his supporters to purge Tripoli of traitors.
  • Some 35 foreigners, most of them journalists, have been released from the Rixos hotel where they were being held by forces loyal to Gaddafi.
