Sarkozy puts his economic policy into reverse

Thursday's French papers are all about budget cuts after the French government announced another 12 billion euros worth yesterday. The right-wing papers are thrilled - the left say he's going back on all the policy promises he made when came into office.

Le Figaro could not back the new austerity measures more enthusiastically, proclaiming that they are just what France needs - but not all the press is so happy.

La Tribune says the rich's new enthusiasm for paying taxes is purely symbolic - while Liberation points out that lots of recent policy announcements have simply reversed the flagship policies that brought Sarkozy to power, on the promise of growth, back in 2007.

Le Monde saves its criticism for the rival Socialists, arguing that Sarkozy might be in reverse, but they cannot agree at all which direction they are going in.

Libération draws fire for putting rumour on its front page

FRENCH PAPERS, Weds. 08/04/13: Left-leaning Libération causes a stir by claiming the Elysée Palace is in a panic over rumours that another minister could have a secret bank account in Switzerland...and that would be Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius. Fabius has strongly denied these claims. It’s unclear why Libération would decide to put an unconfirmed rumour on its front page.
