Right and left face off over police cuts

Tuesday's French papers focus on what to do about soaring urban violence in France's second city Marseille - as politicians from left and right face off over cuts to police numbers.

Le Figaro tows the ruling UMP party line - saying they're boosting police numbers to cut rising crime in Marseille.

Le Monde has a rather different analysis - they say the new boost will still leave the city with fewer officers than before Nicolas Sarkozy's policing cuts.

Liberation analyses why Marseille has become so notorious for crime - pointing to high unemployment and poverty.

Le Parisien looks at Dominique Strauss-Kahn's home town planning celebrations for his return - and looks forward to former president Jacques Chirac's corruption trial, starting on Monday.
