India vs. Monsanto: seeds of discord

For the first time ever, a country - India - is accusing a multinational company of "bio-piracy". That means stealing indigenous plants, and then trying to develop genetically modified versions of them, without giving any compensation back to the local people or nation where the plant originally came from. Our reporters travelled to one of the affected areas and spoke to those who say it's their environment which has been stolen.

Student protests in the Canadian province Quebec are into their fourth month. Hundreds were arrested at marches to mark 100 days since the protests began. Students are demonstrating against an 80 percent rise in tuition fees in Quebec, the Canadian province that has until now enjoyed the country's lowest rates for higher education.

A troubling time for Egypt's Coptic Christians

Egyptians go to the polls tomorrow to vote for a new president for the first time since Hosni Mubarak was ousted during the revolution last year. Two of the front-runners in the presidential race with a realistic chance of winning are devout Islamists, which is troubling for Egypt's Coptic Christians. They are Egypt's largest religious minority and many of them don't think any of the candidates are capable of protecting them from the religious violence that has been steadily increasing.

Palestinians nicknamed it "the battle of the empty stomachs". For weeks, 1,600 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails refused food and drink in what became the longest ever mass hunger strike. Israel finally capitulated and a deal was reached, allowing those in isolation back onto the general wards, and visas for those family members wishing to visit from Gaza. In exchange, prisoners agreed not to carry out "security activities" such as recruiting for terrorist missions.

Serbia's new president - nationalist or not?

Serbia has elected a new president - and it's not the one that most people were expecting. Tomislav Nikolic has unseated Boris Tadic, the man in power since 2004. Observers are worried about the new head of state, who used to be part of the ultra-nationalist Radical Party. He once said he would prefer to be allied with Russia than join the EU, but he has since toned down the rhetoric, saying he will take Serbia to Europe after all.

I retired long back as the MD of Monsanto India after developing a herbicide market.At that time there was no indication of Monsanto entering GM crops in India.Later in one of my review visits to St Louis,I heard that Monsanto is getting out of herbicides business and entering seeds business and that too genetically modified seeds with a terminator gene in it to prevent resowing by the farmer and to have monopoly in seeds market which is several billion dollars worth..Then BT cotton came,creating havoc for the cotton farmers,leading to several thousand of them committing suicide
unable to repay debts caused by high price of seed and no production in several areas.Recently Monsanto has been charged for conducting unauthorised field trials with GM Egg plants.The company is noted for exploiting other countries and to retain a monopoly on seeds for various food crops,extracting a heavy royalty on the GM seeds.It is no friend of India and many of us senior executives quit on this score.

We people will simply say 'Yes Monsanto it is 'your' food we are eating but we are not pay. What the fuck can you do about it!' Can Monsanto do anything then?

The problem is we can eat their food, but there are no seeds to grow another crop. They are making it so that people have to buy seeds every year. Do not buy seedless food.

This is nothing new. You should get a copy of the documentary where even George Bush Senior was involved. It also shows how they s*****d a Canadian farmer out of his entire holding.

But I am not surprised. USA is a country entirely based on the idea of stealing other peoples property and looking after only their own economic interests. Even their declaration of independence was a result of England abolishing slavery by law and patrolling off the coast of Sierra Leone in Africa to curb this trade. Their constitutional right to bear arms was only to decimate the remaining native American population and steal their lands in areas beyond the original states that formed the USA!. The list goes on ad infinitum.

I suspect Monsanto's real objective is to pollute all the world's crops with their GMO genes so they can control all the world's food supply and make all farmers pay their patent tax and buy their patented seed or get sued out of existence. It's high time somebody sued them back.

Good on you India. Finally people are waking up in droves to exactly what the consequences of allowing GM agri-giants to control the industry. Catastrophe after catastrophe for the majority. Massive profits for the corporation and payoffs for some political, judicial, scientific and media persons. Is this a public service? No way. Is this even beneficial? No way. For anyone who is unsure, don't just believe me....Do your own research and THINK about the possible consequences of all this. It is not good. I cannot believe it has gotten this far. Must have been some big payoffs don't you think?
GE research should go ahead with strict scientific protocols and political regulation to GUARANTEE no harm to life or threat to existing biodiversity. We do not want monoculture and we certainly do not want corporations controlling our food source. Corporate controlled Water is bad enough...now attempts to control food....no doubt and "improved, patented new version of super air" is next. jokes aside, Thank you India. You are doing the world a service by protecting your biodiversity. I had felt despondent when I heard that many rice varieties had been lost due to big agribusiness "helping" India some years ago so this fight back is refreshing.
