Text by FRANCE 24

Latest update : 2014-08-04

Libya's interim leaders have confirmed the death of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi in his hometown of Sirte, saying the "liberation of the country" is now complete. Follow the events as they unfolded on our live blog.

• Muammar Gaddafi, Libya's absolute ruler for the past 42 years, was killed on Thursday by National Transitional Council forces. Gaddafi is said to have been found in a drain near his hometown of Sirte, where he had reportedly sought shelter after his convoy was hit by a NATO airstrike.

• FRANCE 24 correspondent Marine Olivesi saw Gaddafi’s dead body in the coastal city of Misrata, as well as that of Gaddafi’s son Moutassim.

• There is confusion over whether or not Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam has also been killed or captured alive.

• The French air force, along with a US drone, initially hit the convoy taking Gaddafi out of Sirte.

• Western leaders hailed news of Gaddafi’s death as the beginning of a new chapter in Libya’s history, with US President Barack Obama pledging that “the United States, along with the international community, is committed to the Libyan people”.
