Fillon buries Sarkozy

Yet more austerity in today's French papers - as they dissect the budget cuts and tax rises announced by PM François Fillon yesterday. Le Figaro reckons they will help the government get re-elected, but Liberation says they're just reversing all of what were once Sarkozy's flagship policies.

La Croix says France does need an austerity plan to pay back its debts - but this is too little, too late and it's unfair.

Le Figaro thinks the plan is balanced and necessary - and 53% of voters it polled say they are willing to make a personal sacrifice to help pay back France's debts.

Liberation is less convinced - they say this is simply a reversal of what were once Nicolas Sarkozy's flagship policies.

La Croix says French people aren't too worried about this though - at least not when it comes to buying Christmas presents, since they plan to spend more than ever.
