Nikiforos Diamandouros, European Ombudsman

Nikiforos Diamandouros has been serving as the European Ombudsman since 2003. His job is to investigate cases of maladministration within the EU administration, including poor access to documents. His name has recently been floated to take over from Greek PM George Papandreou. He tells us about his job as EU mediator and about his country, Greece.

The European Commission has proposed 80 billion euros in spending for the next seven years. But as EU leaders are debating sharp reductions to the EU budget, scientists are urging politicians to keep their budgetary knives away from research funding.
