Defeated election candidate urges army to obey him
Democratic Republic of Congo’s main opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi (pictured), declared defeated in last month’s controversial election, heightened tensions Sunday by urging the army to obey his orders and not those of President Joseph Kabila.

REUTERS - Congo’s top opposition figure on Sunday urged the armed forces to obey him after losing elections he said were fraudulent and added he would offer a “great prize” to anyone who captured President Joseph Kabila.
A close aide to Kabila dismissed Etienne Tshisekedi’s comments as showmanship and said the opposition leader had made similar calls against former President Mobutu Sese Seko that had been ignored by the people.
However, the veteran politician’s comments do threaten to escalate a row over the results of a Nov. 28 presidential contest, which international observers say lacked credibility.
“I call on all of you to look for (Kabila) wherever he is in the country and bring him here alive,” Tshisekedi said in his first news conference since official figures showed he was soundly beaten by Kabila.
“If you bring Kabila here to me you’ll receive a great prize,” he said, urging the armed forces to obey the country’s “legitimate authority”.
The president, who was thought to be in Kinshasa on Sunday evening, has broad support within the military, although his rival is strongly backed by Kinshasa residents.
The election was meant to put Congo on a path to greater stability after decades of turmoil, but has instead deepened divisions. Around 20 people were reported killed in clashes before and afterwards as opposition supporters took to the streets accusing the government of vote rigging.
Election observers have said the poll, Congo’s second since a 1998-2003 civil war that killed more than five million people, was marred by irregularities, though Congo’s election commission has said any problems did not affect the ultimate outcome.
“We as a government have followed every step of the constitution,” Kikaya Bin Karubi, the Congo’s envoy to Britain, told Reuters.
Kabila took around 49 percent of the vote to Tshisekedi’s 32 percent, according to results ratified by Congo’s Supreme Court on Friday. Tshisekedi has rejected the outcome and declared himself president.
Kabila, who came to power after his father Laurent was killed in 2001, admitted last week there were “problems” with the election but said the legitimacy of the outcome could not be doubted.
The U.S. ambassador to Congo called the election “seriously flawed” while U.S.-backed observers, the Carter Center, said results “lack credibility”.
Congo is at the bottom of the U.N.’s human development index and investors say it is one of the toughest places in the world to do business, despite its vast mineral riches.

Election
It is with deep regret to find a country like congo, the so called Leaders could not find a solution in the just ended election and admit the result produced by CENI, and find ways of building the country and push for the development of the country. If the person of Tshisekedi@ his age can still think he is the person to put congo in good parth, he is dreaming. Lets all Unite behind President Kabila and re build that Congo.
Where are the written
Where are the written complaints against the CENI? You international human whatever why not investigate mattres before publishing your reports not supported by evidence. Even our comment are not correct fearing to be killed by people hijacking the peace of our country. Try to stop any person bringing tumoil in the DRCongo. We would like to grow without your permanent interferences in our own political affairs.

Powder Keg
The DRC is ready to explode. The 2003 Sun City accords were just window dressing. Bemba's MLC and Rwanda's proxies, the RCD, never disarmed and the lines have not changed. The international community's maind esire was to contain the Congo war and prevent it from spreading. This they have done. But the country remains as divided and lawless as ever.
We need to understand that imperial desires for resources have nothing in common with the interests of the people. And like in the Ivory Coast, the UN has turned a blind eye to electoral fraud in imperial interests. How much of Congo does Kbila rule? How will his army hold up against the combined forces of the MLC and RCD should they decide to aline with Tshekedi?
Poor Congolese people. Your troubles are far from over. Your error is many of you still trust the international community to help.
enough is enough
congolese people are tired of all this occidental machine leading them in groove the time as come to turn this molted page kabila must go and tshisekedi must lead is congolese people they trust him they have voted him thanks

you the african politician should open your eyes and stop creating problems.dont only go for your interest, all the problems are cause by politician.how can you be won and you want it to be turned to war,is only a foolish person fights for a politician, because you be fighting for them while you and your families are in danger and all their families will be properly secured is time for we the young africans to open our eyes an look for the best but not to fight.
africa
Is high time for the oppositions in africa to learn to stand deffeat and knows that africa is for the africans ,and put your useless self intres behind and respect the well of the people of your country .................africa peace
I rule for the people!
International observers have mentioned irregularities, which are obvious, for example in the region of Katanga they noticed a population turn up of 100,14% which is statistically impossible and from this high turn up 99% voted for Kabila, (as if this kind of fraude cannot affect the results of an election??). The opposition has several times requested the Ceni, the Joseph Kabila and the observers to compare their records of every poll, request which was denied. The CSJ (Supreme Court of Justice) was dismissed and a new one was hired one month prior to the elections by Joseph Kabila. It is amazing how all the academics in the world, politicians and media cannot connect the dots. Long live democracy
