The latest spike in unemployment grabs headlines with just four months to go before the presidential election. It's extra fuel for partisanship on the front pages of two of the main papers: Libération knocks Sarkozy for placing his supporters in key positions, while Le Figaro slams Hollande for groping in the dark. That's the focus for this look at the French papers, Wednesday 28th December 2011.

Some stories from today's French press review:

Le Parisien/Aujourd’hui-en-France headlines: “Unemployment - the candidates’ proposals”. Unemployment in France is now the highest in 12 years after 30,000 more jobless signed on in November. The paper's two-page report argues this is now a key campaign issue.

Les Echos: “De-industrialisation – almost 900 factories have closed in France in three years”.

Le Figaro front page editorial: “Socialist Party - the year of two disappearances”.

Libération: “Four months from the presidential election, Sarkozy places his supporters”

And the Catholic daily La Croix leads with a good news story: “Improvement in the care for the homeless”.
