Who does Joan of Arc belong to?
Today is the 600th anniversary of Joan of Arc's birth and papers look at how politicians in France are co-opting her image. Threats to France's AAA rating also feature, as does a report on how two French hostages were killed in Niger last January. That's the focus for this French press review, Friday 6th January 2012.
Libération headlines : "Les aveux d’un terroriste" ("The confessions of a terrorist"). It has obtained the police statement of one of the members of al Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb who abducted two French men a year in Niamey, Niger. Antoine de Léocour and Vincent Délory, both 25, were killed in a failed rescue attempt.
La Croix’s editorial – entitled "Irrécuperable" - slams the use of Joan of Arc as part of political campaigning in the French presidential election. It is the 600th anniversary of Joan of Arc’s birth today.
