Tsonga wins Qatar Open

France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (pictured) defeated countryman Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday to win the Qatar Open. It is his eighth career title.

AFP - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated French compatriot Gael Monfils 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday to win the Qatar Open.

Third seeded Tsonga claimed his eighth career title and a third win in four meetings with Monfils on a day when the final had to be halted early in the first set because of fog and a slippery court.

"It was difficult. The surface was very slippery especially on the 'Qatar' sign painted on the court," said the 26-year-old Tsonga.

"It was dangerous but they did enough to make it OK. This is a good win for me going into the Australian Open, it's just amazing."
