Perfumier Guerlain on trial for racist slur
Perfume impresario Jean-Paul Guerlain went on trial in Paris Thursday over a 2010 incident in which he described himself as working like a "negre" – a racist slur - and then implying that black people were lazy.

AFP - French parfumier Jean-Paul Guerlain, for decades the "nose" behind the world-famous perfume brand, went on trial Thursday on racism charges after televised remarks caused widespread offence.
Asked in an October 2010 interview about how he created the Samsara scent, Guerlain replied using a racial slur -- the French term "negre" -- and implied that black people are lazy.
"For once, I set to work like a negro. I don't know if negroes have always worked like that, but anyway..." he said.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation, with anti-racism groups saying it highlighted deep prejudice in French society.
On Thursday, the 75-year-old heir to one of the world's oldest perfume houses appeared in court here to face charges of making "racist insults" during an interview on French public television.
Guerlain, who entered the court on crutches, faces up to six months in prison and a 22,500 euro ($30,000) fine.
At the time, his comments were quickly denounced, with France's Movement Against Racism and for Friendship (MRAP) saying the remarks revealed "the state of ordinary racism that still permeates French society."
Guerlain apologised but protests erupted outside the company's boutique on the Champs Elysees in Paris and there were calls for a boycott of Guerlain and its owner, luxury brand giant Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH).
"I offer my apologies to all those who might have been hurt by my shocking words," Guerlain said in a statement after the interview. He said the comments "in no way reflect my true thinking, but were a slip of the tongue."
The Guerlain company also distanced itself from the remarks, saying his words were "unacceptable" and noting that Guerlain had not been a shareholder since 1996 or on salary since 2002.
Guerlain took over the family perfume house from his grandfather, Jacques, in 1959, by which time he could recognise 3,000 subtly different smells.
The perfume house was run by the Guerlain family for five generations and created over 300 fragrances since doctor and chemist Pierre Francois Pascal Guerlain opened his first perfume boutique in Paris 183 years ago.
LVMH purchased the company in 1994 and Guerlain remained as master perfumer until he retired in 2002.
During his time at the company he was hailed as one of the great perfume "noses" of the 20th century and created famous scents including Samsara, Nahema and Jardins de Bagatelle.

Draconian imposition
I feel for this guy. He made one innocuous comment that does not offend me and he is being treated like Jesus when he was crucified. The doctrine of political correctness is something that is imposed as an almost godlike law by the liberals. But one should note that there is nothing in the bible that says one should be persecuted for simply having and exuding a racial instinct. On the contrary I am sure that god would promote people to fight for their races survival. Particularly when it is being threatened by people that want to destroy it. The path to destruction is wide. There is nothing more abominable than a liberal hypocrite. I will not change my views and if people want to put us in jail for speaking the truth then the good of us must suffer for righteousness sake.
Working like a negro is not
Working like a negro is not bad at all as it doesn't mean lazy but on the contrary meaning they work a lot! I use this expression myself often and I m not racist at all so it is totally stupid that he have to go on court for that! Imagine if I say I m gonna work like crazy should it mean something bad for crazy people, honestly the court should judge bad people murderer etc and stop wasting time and money on nothing.
Ostracizing the False Faces of France
It is amazing to see cultural misfits like Guerlain or Galliano still have any following among the more civilized and average citizens of 21st century French society. At some point, beyond fines and prison, France should increase their separation and ostracizing of these socially psychotic misfits (psychotique socialement inadaptés) as not representative of any part of civilized France. They keep proving themselves to be nothing more than public parasites rather than positive participants in modern France. Moreover, let's stop buying the products and false images these misfits peddle to the world as symbolic of what it means to be genuinely French. Money talks!
I confirm they are lazy
everybody who thinks similar shouold sign here as well
Of course there's no excuse
Of course there's no excuse for that kind of comment, but the guy is like 100 years old; he comes from a totally different generation where subtle racism was not considered racist.
@St. Martin: 500 years of
@St. Martin: 500 years of slavery in America? Your stats are way off on that one. And, Obama has milked that racist card. Don't count on Obama turning anything around. He will not be reelected...
You also assume only white man owned black slaves. Wrong! In America there were also black slave owners. First, most blacks in early America were not even from Africa. Most emigrated into the US through the southern boarders from southern countries. Slaves in America came from Africa and were sold by blacks.... Some of your forefathers may have been slaves but you are not. BTW, some of my forefathers were German Jews and were slaughtered. I don't use that for an excuse that someone owes me something b/c I won't succeed in life with that type of rationale. Also, my ggGrandfather fought in the civil war for the union. He was as white as snow. In our family cemetery there are ancestors buried there who died fighting for your forefather slaves, so please, stop lumping all people together. There are good and bad in all races and cultures.
Racist pig
Black people worked for over 500 years for free as slaves in the American and also slaved for the Europeans and now according to Guerlain "black people are lazy" Wow. bumbumclart. After all most of those racist pigs inheret their wealth through free labor from African Slaves. We have a right to suck Europeens nation who ever own slaves dry. Why should Africans work. Didn't our foreparents slave for hundreds of years. Don't worry Obama is president more is to come the roles will be reverse soon. The last shall be first and the so called first will be last. Watch out.
working like a dog
what a strange world we live in today. Real racism show by how many black people are in the goverment and not stupid old expressions.
FREEDOM OF SPEECH
This is supposedly the country that invented liberty, but never practices it. Why not let the court of public opinion crucify Guerlain, and not the government. Thank God for the US Constition.
