The Arizona primary was plain sailing, but his victory was hard-won in his home state of Michigan, with ultra-conservative contender Rick Santorum trailing just behind. Romney is now the favourite to stand against Barack Obama - but the real test will come during next week's crucial Super Tuesday on March 6th, when ten states will vote for their choice of Republican candidate.
