Is Wukan village setting a precedent for free and fair local elections in Communist China? After a spate of land seizures in December, Wukan residents took matters into their own hands and demanded they be allowed to elect the local authorities. It remains to be seen whether the Wukan model could be applied elsewhere, but the village has gained a lot of attention in China and abroad. Our correspondents report from the trailblazing town.

French submarines in murky waters

Pakistan is said to be close to buying three French submarines, but negotiations are unfolding in a context of suspicions of corruption linked to a previous submarine sale, said to be linked to the Karachi bombing of 2002.
