Al-Assad secret emails lift lid on president's private life

We are focusing on Syria today. On the anniversary of the beginning of the uprising, an extraordinary cache of over 3000 of Bashar and Asma al-Assad's private emails has been leaked to the Guardian.

The Guardian has published extracts from those emails - showing al-Assad sought help from Iran, the couple exchanged videos mocking the protesters, and details of Asma al-Assad's luxury shopping sprees.

Gulf News asks if he can still be persuaded to step down - while the National focuses on encouraging defections from within the regime.

The Washington Post pays tribute to the bravery and determination of opposition activists - but, as the New York Times explains, they just can't agree with each other.
